Quotes from the Directors

"Juggling my work as a designer and working to make this project a reality is not proving easy, but how many people are in the privileged position of having a building like Kelburn as a canvass and a dad as liberal as to allow his home to be transformed into a multi-coloured piece of fantasy art!" - David Boyle

"I still clearly remember casually discussing the concept of this project with Alice and some friends nearly a year ago now, and the vivid feeling of ‘if only’ we all felt. Now, with Historic Scotland’s backing and the artists arriving in 3 weeks, I still have difficulty grasping the scale of what really is going to happen and how we got here without a huge spanner in the works." - David Boyle

"I just hope everyone can share in our excitement and anticipation as we wait for this monumental work to begin. Hope to see you here!" - David Boyle

"I am usually based in Edinburgh; however, I have recently come home to continue working on the graffiti project. My dad is very liberal and creative and has practically let David and I have artistic licence in the running of this project. Not saying there has not been any arguments!" - Alice Boyle

"If kelburn was not struggling financially a project like this would never come about, because everything becomes just too precious. Both David and I have both had artistic backgrounds so generally all of our ideas never tick any profit making boxes. However we thought an opportunity like this could not be missed!" - Alice Boyle

"I know there maybe some controversy, but I keep focusing on the artistic credibility of the project and remembering back to when we thought this could never happen... There is no going back!" - Alice Boyle

"It has always been our intention to involve local and other international writers in the project, and we are currently working on plans to use areas within kelburn country centre for the assembly of walls which everyone can work on, which we are currently trying to secure funding for. We hope this will become a permanent exhibition that will be a fantastic legacy for the project and will last far beyond the removal of the castle walls!" - David Boyle

"We hope that the outstanding work by our visiting artists will really raise the profile of Graffiti art in this country and allow many Scottish artists to emerge from the project and be viewed in a slightly different light." - Camilla Wegener

"Our time scale has been been short and there has been many logistical problems that we have had to deal with along the way. Some expected and some completely unexpected. With the backing now of Historic Scotland, the Council and our Dad we hope this project will capture everyone’s imagination and bring more people to Scotland." - Alice Boyle

"We love the work of Os Gemeos, Nina and Nunca and thought the contrast and vibrant and fantastical nature of their work fitted in perfectly with the atmosphere at Kelburn. That was our motivation, but it would be fantastic if extra visitors through the park gates would also contribute towards the new render, not to mention all the work needed on the roof." - David Boyle

"Kelburn is a family park and so obviously we all have to be respectful of what is potentially going to be a very diverse crowd." - Camilla Wegener

"We are extremely privileged to be in a position whereby we have the opportunity to direct a project like this, of which we are extremely grateful." - Camilla Wegener

"I want to buy back just one more week as I didn’t anticipate there would be quite this much to do and think about." - David Boyle

"Local support has been fantastic; everyone is helping out and giving David and myself lots of encouragement. Thanks so much to everyone in Largs and Fairlie." - Alice and David Boyle

Quotes from Lord Glasgow

“When my son, David, and daughter, Alice, came to tell me they had secured the services of some Brazilian artists to paint graffiti on the back of Kelburn Castle, I thought they had gone mad. Because the castle is to be re-harled within the next three years (the outside protective pebbledash to be taken off and replaced), they thought this a marvellous opportunity to cover parts of it with fantastical multi-coloured illustrations in the meantime. When I had recovered from the shock and found time to learn something about the Brazilians’ work, I gradually, tentatively, came round to the idea."

"The artists are Famous in South America and well known to cognoscenti in the art world here but, until now, most of their work had been done on flat walls. The idea of having a castle in Scotland with towers and turrets and windows to work on (and around) appealed to them and now appeals to me. As far as I know, nothing like this has ever been attempted in Scotland before and the clash of cultures will give the whole enterprise an almost surreal quality. Now, I wait with both excitement and trepidation, to see the result.”

Other Quotes from the Team

"When we hit 10,000 visitors on our website in just 10 days without a press release, promotion or any paint on the wall, I was almost in need of a new pair of trousers! But on reflection its not hard to see why people are taken by the concept and why it has so far proven so popular. This is going to be the experience of a lifetime for all of us and I can't wait." - Adam Hill
